Warriors Compete in the Chris Rinne Twilight
By Francisco Claudio
The Westcliff track and field team traveled to Riverside, California on Friday to compete in the 2023 Chris Rinne Twilight.
Westcliff had four student-athletes competing as they continued building and working through every hurdle, fine-tuning their skills this season.
First up is Harrison Horner, one of the cornerstones of this program.
Horner competed in the Men's 200M and 400M Dash where he had found success last month in the Team 4 Titus and Ely Invitational at Concordia.
Again, Horner found success, this time in the 200M Dash with a personal best this season of 22.84.
In a sport where the margins for error and for improvement are small, this was .18 (seconds) quicker than his previous time at the Whittier Twilight.
In the Men's 400M Sprint, Horner placed 13th with 50 seconds flat.
Mike Crosby who is the new addition to this program as Head Coach was delighted with Horner's performance: "Horner was the stand out at the meet running 50.00 for the 400 and a seasonal PR of 22.84 in the 200."
Up next we have frosh jumper, Alexandro Villegas who competed in the Men's 100M Dash and the Men's Triple Jump.
In the 100M Villegas received a time of 12.74 and for the Triple Jump had a distance of 11.85M
Esmeray Demirbas continued to display her talents as a multiple sport athlete as she competed in the Women's 100M and 200M.
Demirbas ran the 100M in 13.68 (seconds) and the 200M in 28.71 (seconds).
Alex Juarez, another recent newcomer, ran the Women's 800M with a time of 3:36.
"I appreciate Alex's great attitude," said Crosby. "She's new to the sport, and not very competitive towards the front, but has a great attitude, and will improve as she continues to train."
This was the last event before the Cal Pac Championship Meet which has been circled on the calendar of the Warriors since the start of their season.
"We are looking forward to the Cal Pac Conference track meet which is next Thursday and Friday," said Crosby. "The meet is a little different because they don't score all the events. For example, there's no high jump for either men or women yet we have a high jumper.
"Everyone will compete in the same events they did this weekend at the conference meet, and Horner has a good chance of being the conference champ in the 400M and I expect he will score points for the team also in the 200."
The Cal Pac Championship Meet will take place April 27-28 at Soka University in Aliso Viejo.
Thursday's start will be in the evening at 5:00 PM.
Friday will have an afternoon start at 12:00 PM.
