Dordt Uses Size to Upend Warriors

The Westcliff women's basketball team wrapped up its pre-Christmas schedule Saturday afternoon at the Jordan Lawley Center, where Dordt University (Iowa) used its size advantage to hand the Warriors a 72-59 loss.
Ashtyn Veerbeek dominated the post, and showed her stretch capabilities, knocking down a pair of triples to finish with 19 points and nine rebounds in leading the Defenders.
For Westcliff, Trinity Vasquez took the reins again, turning in her second straight, game-high 21-point performance on identical 9-of-17 shooting nights.
Laura Tapia and Bailey Hawkins (12 rebounds) turned in eight points each, while Remy Hare had six and Neyha Lali and Jemma Bennett chipped in five apiece.
After Westcliff and Dordt played a competitive first quarter, Dordt took over in the second, winning the frame 15-2.
The depth of the veteran Defenders showed itself early and often.
Karly Gustafson had 11 points, Macey Neilson had nine, Janie Schoonhoven turned in eight and Mya Chmielewski had seven.
Dordt shot 47.9% from the field and 42.9% from three.
Westcliff, meanwhile, shot 39.7% from the field and 41.7% from three.
Up next, the Warriors meet Hope International in Fullerton.
The game tips off at 4 p.m. on Thursday, Dec. 30.
