There was a reason why Westcliff women's basketball played through a gauntlet first-half of the season.
The Warriors placed improving over collecting breezy preseason wins.
But now that Santa has come and gone, and we've welcomed in a new year – that bill is coming due for Warrior opponents.
Westcliff dominated Bethesda Tuesday night at Golden West College, 84-33, a 50-piece in which every single player on the roster scored.
Trinity Vasquez was unstoppable, scoring a game-high 23 points on 9-of-18 shooting to complement 10 rebounds, six steals and five assists. Vazquez also finished the night without committing a turnover.
"She can definitely score," Westcliff head coach Kyle Rouse said. "And the thing I liked about today was she slowed down a tiny bit and read the defense. Coach Mary (Dishoian) has been pushing her to shoot the three and extend that defense out. She didn't shoot a ton (of threes), but she did hit her first one, and scouts are going to see that."
But the scouts have far more to worry about than just Vasquez.
Bailey Hawkins dominated the post, turning in a 10-point, 10-rebound double-double, and Laura Tapia was lights out once again at point, collecting 14 points, seven assists and three steals.
Remy Hare, meanwhile, dropped 12 points and added four rebounds and a pair of assists and steals each.
Jemma Bennett got the start at the three and did her thing, splashing home a triple in the second half and collecting five.
Both Sara Weber (four rebounds, three assists, two steals) and Mariah Wonders (four rebounds) came off the bench to provide seven points each, while Neyha Lali chipped in four, and Isabella Walsh added a post finish to complement her seven boards – five on the offensive end.
Westcliff racked up 20 steals to Bethesda's two and outrebounded the Flames, 44-30.
"The biggest thing today was just playing to our potential," Rouse said. "Just doing the things we should be doing execution-wise. I wasn't thrilled with our defense, especially in the first half. There are a lot of little details we need to work on, especially in our man (defense)."
If COVID stays out of the way, the Warriors (3-7) will open California Pacific Conference play Saturday at Antelope Valley.
Tip is scheduled for 5:30 p.m.
