Warriors drop match to #1 Keiser - NAIA Opening Round
In one season, Westcliff head coach Jack Gidney changed the culture of women's soccer and took the team to great new heights. Photo by Brandon Petersen.
A Planted Tree, Women’s Soccer Will Only Continue to Grow

Westcliff women’s soccer head coach Jack Gidney uses the metaphor of a tree when describing his team and the role his 2022 seniors played in planting that tree. It was a group that collectively introduced women’s soccer as Westcliff’s most successful program a year before Covid hit. It was a group that experienced two coaching changes in three years, and was absolutely snake-bitten a year ago, losing the entire season, in essence, to various injuries and spells of extreme bad luck. It was also the group that went to the mattresses to fight for Gidney, an assistant last year who the team was incredibly vocal about Westcliff elevating to their leader.

Warriors Stun Firebirds, Earn Finals Berth

On Oct. 22, after a loss at Embry-Riddle, Westcliff women’s soccer head coach Jack Gidney  said. “We strongly believe we will see them again in California."  Gidney and his coaching staff were right.  Saturday night in Riverside, the Warriors and Eagles will do battle for the California Pacific Conference championship.  The Westcliff women’s soccer team earned its way into the final with a stunning comeback win over Saint Katherine Thursday at La Sierra.

Warriors Earn Cal Pac Bye with Win over Providence

Let’s break from tradition, bust down the fourth-wall, and ignite this gamer with a little recognition, perhaps even a high-five or two, for one Taylor Gayer — a true Warrior, if there ever was one. Gayer, a senior, a great-spirit, and a comeback-kid all rolled into one, collected her first win as keeper on Sr. Night Thursday at the Great Park, where the Westcliff women’s soccer team celebrated in style with a 4-0 sheet of Providence Christian. The Warriors’ senior keeper finished with three saves in a complete-match, shutout performance.

True Warriors: Women’s Soccer Shuns Adversity in Win

It’s been a difficult week for the Westcliff women’s soccer team. Tuesday’s 2-1 win over Benedictine Mesa at the Great Park was the Warriors’ third contest in six days — with a seven-hour bus ride mixed in. It was unseasonably hot, their legs were tired, they tapped deep into the reserves. None of it mattered.

Westcliff Rolls Park, Embry-Riddle Next

The Westcliff women’s soccer team has certainly found itself over the course of the past six Cal Pac contests, with a 4-0 win over at Park-Gilbert Thursday serving as the latest piece of evidence.

Warriors Taking Names Down the Stretch

This is the team head coach Jack Gidney envisioned from the start. Tactically sound, collaborative and explosive, the Westcliff women’s soccer team is firing on all cylinders down the stretch. Thursday night at Soka, Westcliff racked up yet another clean sheet, and added six more goals. In its past five Cal Pac contests, all wins, Westcliff has turned in four shutouts and has outscored its opponents, 25-1. The 6-0 drubbing Thursday night was highlighted by stellar performances all around, perhaps none more impressive than Sierra Rangel’s.

The Westcliff women’s soccer team beat Cal Maritime by a touchdown and a field goal Saturday morning in Vallejo. The 10-0 drubbing of Cal Maritime got out-of-hand quickly.

Warriors Roll Through Pacific Union

For those unfamiliar with the northern part of the state, Angwin, the location of Pacific Uninon College, doesn’t really resemble the California you and I know.  It’s more like southern Oregon, lush evergreens forests and thick, long Bermuda grass — the type of turf that can easily frustrate a soccer player used to quicker playing surfaces. Such was the case for the Westcliff women’s soccer team Thursday in Angwin — but, no matter — the Warriors were able to find their footing and put away the Pioneers, 3-0.

SDC Snags Stalemate Late

The Westcliff women’s soccer team was cruising toward a nice nonconference win in Santee Wednesday afternoon, but a last-minute goal derailed those plans in a 2-2 tie at San Diego Christian.

Warriors’ Scoring Struggles Continue in loss to USK

The Westcliff women’s soccer team struggled in the box once again Thursday afternoon at the Great Park, where the Firebirds of USK pulled out the win, 2-0.

Warriors Kick Off Cal Pac with Big Win

The Westcliff women’s soccer team picked up their first Cal Pac win on their first attempt Friday at Lomas Lomas Park, where the Warriors came from behind to knock off UC Merced, 3-2.

Warriors Even Up with Westmont

It wasn’t the Warriors most important contest — a final tune-up before Cal Pac play starts Friday — but it was an opportunity to match up against a nationally-ranked opponent and see where Westcliff stood. Considering the Warriors didn’t play their best match, and were missing a number of key contributors, it was a successful outing. Westcliff started the match with a number of golden opportunities, one of which they connected on, then battled tooth-and-nail from there to hang on for a 1-1 tie with No. 8 Westmont Monday at the Great Park.

Eyeing Cal Pac Hardware, Women’s Soccer Stirs

Last season, mercifully, is long over for the Westcliff women’s soccer team. It was a year of unprecedented bad luck — torn ACL’s, car crashes, rogue felines bearing animus toward Hydroflasks — just, don’t ask. But 2022 is a new year, and the Warriors are right back where they belong — in contention for a Cal Pac championship.
