WU Dominates the AZ Cal Pac Jamboree, Goes 4-0
The Westcliff women's beach volleyball team was met with some early challenges to start their season as they lost two in a row against nonconference opponents.
A feeling that they aren't used to as one of the top beach programs in the NAIA.
But that didn't discourage them as they simply went back to work and focused on what needed to be improved ahead of the Arizona Cal Pac Jamboree where they would play four matches against their fellow conference opponents.
The results speak for themselves as the Warriors went 4-0 and took care of business as they currently sit at the top as the only undefeated team in the conference.
Before competing, head coach, Hannah Matt sat down with the team and addressed areas that needed to be a priority.
"We had a team discussion about how we react when things aren't going well and how our true character comes out in these situations," Matt said. "I asked the girls what type of person and teammate they want to be and how we can be more selfless teammates to achieve our common goal.
"They really reflected on these questions and made significant strides in our team culture and chemistry. It was really fun to see this put into action and how it affected our play this weekend too. It was a proud coaching moment for me."
Two pairs went undefeated during the weekend for the Warriors.
WU's Pair 1 of Brooke Scheidle and Marcella Rodriguez were in top form which helped them earn NAIA and Cal Pac Pair of the Week.
Pair 4 made up of Faith Webb and Chloe Johnson worked hard and were clutch for the Warriors winning all their matches too.
"Both pairs worked through some tough sets and always came together as a team with a smile on their faces," Matt said.
It was a successful weekend for Westcliff who will try to take this momentum to the next jamboree that will be held at USK's venue.
After celebrating a successful weekend, it's time to get back to work with plenty of matches left to play.
"Our theme for the weekend was to focus less on the outcome of our games and to focus more on our attitude and effort individually and as a pair," Matt said. "I told the girls I don't care what the score of the dual is as long as we can leave that day knowing we gave our best attitude and effort, then we can be satisfied knowing we've done our part."
Up next, the Warrior will play some nonconference against Concordia Irvine, CSU Northridge, and Vanguard.
Then they will take a trip down to San Marcos for the California Jamboree.
