Warriors Battle Through Rain Delay
By Francisco Claudio
Both Westcliff tennis teams traveled to Point Loma on Tuesday as they ramp up their preparations to start conference competition at the end of this week
The conditions weren't the most ideal for a day of tennis, and a rain delay did not help either team.
After everyone was done playing, both Westcliff men's and women's tennis teams left Point Loma having lost 5-2 respectively.
But even in a loss, there are a lot of positives to take from and things to improve for the next match.
Head coach Ross Duncan surely sees that and the potential that his teams have yet to reach: "Overall we got what we needed in terms of tough competition heading into conference play this weekend."
" The Warrior spirit was alive and well and we are excited about our season."
The men lost close doubles matches in their #1 and #2 doubles teams.
"In singles, we had two three-setters, Loick lost 6-3 in the third," said Duncan. Emile won 16-14 in the third set breaker at number six. He had eight match points and fought off three match points with his family visiting from France in attendance. Super amazing moment for him."
"Overall we lost 5-2, but it was a great competitive match."
The women also lost 5-2, but Coach Duncan knows what they need to work on in order to take the next step.
"We lost all three doubles matches and we need to play better on the bigger points," said Duncan.
Women's singles got wins from Marielena Muench at #1, 10-8 in the third set.
Lilian Burth in singles #4 also got a win going into the third set and coming out on top 10-8.
Alessia Radu had to retire at #3 after rolling her ankle.
Neele Menssen played her first match as a Warrior at #5 but lost 6-1, 6-2.
Kanon Sorakubo played at #2 singles and even though she lost 6-2, 7-5, played well.
Up next both the men's and women's tennis teams will travel together to take on Holy Names on Thursday, Feb. 16.
The women will start at 10 AM and the men at 2 PM.
