Vaknin goes nuts on Sr. Day, scoring four as Dubs roll
By Brandon Petersen
Megan Thee Stallion echoed throughout cavernous LeBard Stadium at OCC Sunday afternoon, where Adi Vaknin christened the Sr. Day ceremony with "Body," providing the soundtrack: "Adi-Adi-Adi-Adi…" and so forth.
Not exactly Tupac, but the kids dig it.
As for Vaknin, he'll be playing Ms. Thee Stallion in his earbuds from now until eternity after the performance he turned in Sunday — a hattie-plus-one, four goals in all — leading Westcliff past Cal Maritime, 6–2.
The senior forward scored three times in a blistering seven-minute stretch midway through the first half, putting the Warriors up 3–0 before most fans had even settled in.
His finishing was ruthless, his movement clinical, and by the time his fourth hit the back of the net in the 66th minute, the game had long tilted into a celebration.
Jordan Di Lonardo added two goals of his own, one assisted by Vaknin, the other a slick solo finish that had the home bench roaring.
Di Lonardo is now tantalizingly close to Q Hornung's all-time goals mark – just two behind.
The Warriors outshot Cal Maritime 39–12, peppering the Keelhaulers' box from every angle and looking every bit a team rounding into postseason form.
"It was an emotional day with all the seniors that we have," head coach Randy Dodge said. "But the guys responded really well and played solid. It was great to see Adi score a hat trick and for Jordan to score two in the run of play.
"I'm so happy for our seniors, who have left a huge legacy for our future players to uphold."
Goalkeepers Fabi Jager and Olly Scott split halves in net, with Scott earning the win and a few key saves late.
The Warriors led 3–0 at halftime and never looked back, controlling possession and showcasing the depth Dodge has been preaching all season.
Even in defeat, there was mutual respect — Cal Maritime's Jose Diaz and Maxime Jolley found the net in the second half, refusing to fold despite Westcliff's relentless tempo.
The win lifts Westcliff to 8–4–2 overall and 5–1–1 in Cal Pac play, as the Warriors begin to sense the conference tournament just over the horizon.
