Beggars Score 5 in 10th to Win It

For much of Friday evening's contest at Amerige Park in Fullerton, the Westcliff baseball team was in control. Shawn Hepler got the start and was better than solid through seven and two-thirds, striking out 11, and allowing just three earned. After Keith Hale belted a homerun to right-center in the bottom of the seventh to take a 4-2 lead, the Warriors needed just a couple more zeros to capture the win. That didn't happen. Providence Christian scored one in the eighth, one more in the ninth to tie it, and put up a crooked five-spot in the top of the 10th to claim a 9-4 victory.

Westcliff hosted Simpson at Jserra High School for their 1st game in the 3 game series. The game saw the Warriors struggled early to find hitting momentum. Westcliff in the latter part of the game knew they had to produce hits to win the game. Westcliff trailing by 2 went into the bottom of the 6th with a 2 out Home Run from Evan Rocha brought life and energy to the Warrior dugout. That was not all Keith Hale on a walk then stolen base and advancing to third on an error in scoring position for Trey Harmon. Harmon coming up to the plate hit a double to left center to send Hale home. Westcliff were now down by 1. In the bottom of the 8th it was another 2 out scenario like the 6th Inning. Trey Harmon reached 1st off an error. The Warriors now have a man on 1st and 2nd with 2 outs looming over the heads of the Warriors. Coming up to the plate was the Designated Hitter Zack Sorondo. Sorondo hit a double on the right field line to send Harmon and Hale Home for the lead. The Warriors were now 3 outs away from their 1st conference win of the season. Coach Shermet made a gutsy call with putting in shortstop Raul Gonzalez to the mound to finish out this game. Gonzalez was up to the challenge going 1,2 with the batters now 1 out away. Simpson was able to produce 2 singles to put a man on 1st and 2nd. Gonzalez unfazed from the pressure delivered his pitch that resulted in a groundout to the 1st baseman Trey Harmon. Westcliff take the win 4-3.

This One Was For JJ

When the Westcliff baseball team took the field for the first time in 2022, they did so without their captain, JJ Sanchez. Sanchez passed away during Christmas break, and it's been an emotional journey back to Great Park Stadium for the Warriors ever since. On Friday, the Warriors celebrated Sanchez in an emotional pregame ceremony, retiring forever his jersey number, 16, as the university awarded him a posthumous degree, and his father, Jason, threw out the ceremonial first pitch.
