The Women's Basketball Coaches Association held its annual national convention last weekend in Minneapolis, Minn., and Westcliff women's basketball head coach Kyle Rouse was asked to present a panel on creating effective and engaging practices. Coming off a season in which Westcliff qualified for the NAIA national tournament in its first year of eligibility and claimed its first ever All NAIA national recognition for a player (Trinity Vasquez), it was the proverbial cherry-on-top when Rouse was asked to present.
Westcliff's Women's Basketball team fell short in the NAIA Women's Basketball Opening Round to the defending National Champions and the #2 ranked team in the nation Westmont College. Throughout the game our Warriors team did what they have done all year which was fight for 40 minutes. The game started off intense with Westmont gaining the lead but the Warriors soon found their rhythm. The 1st period ended with a score Westmont 13 Westcliff 11. However, those 11 points are a little deceiving. Freshman Guard Neyha Lali who all season has facilitated key shots for other Warriors. In this game against Westmont it was Lali that found open looks with a hot streak. Neyha in the 1st period shot all 11 points for the Warriors keeping them in the game. 2nd Period saw the Warriors both Westmont and Westcliff fight for every possession. The Warriors went into the half down up 2 with a last second layup from Laura Tapia. More impressive from the guard Neyha Lali at the half was shooting 100% from the field for 16 points 3-3 from beyond the arc. Entering into the 3rd period Westmont started separating themselves from the Warriors. Westcliff kept the game within reach from some key offensive plays from Bailey Hawkins and Trinity Vasquez. The 4th period Westcliff fought down up 10. Westcliff never gave up against the #1 seed in the bracket. Westmont ultimately came up with the win 62-47. The Women's Basketball team set a new bar here at Westcliff University. Even though they were seeded as #16 against the #1 seeded Westmont who are also the defending NAIA National Champions. Westcliff earned respect from the Westmont team and administration for not giving them an easy win in the opening round. Westcliff Women's Basketball earned the ticket to the National Championship in their 1st year of eligibility some teams wait decades. No one can take away from this team what they accomplished. No other team can be the 1st team to make it to the NAIA National Championship. This belongs to the Women's Basketball team of 2021-2022.
Moral victories are for the birds. No one wants to talk about how great the season was immediately after it comes to a screeching halt. But some seasons are that good, and luckily for the Westcliff women's basketball team, after falling in the California Pacific Conference championship game in their first year of Cal Pac competition, 64-46, to UC Merced, the season is not over.
Most of Warrior Nation was glued to their computers Monday night. It's been less than a year of California Pacific Conference competition and the impatient Warriors are ready to celebrate. That will come soon enough, and maybe this go-around, but until then, all of Irvine, California is behind the Westcliff women's basketball team, which has already made history, and is ready to make some more after beating La Sierra in the first round of the Cal Pac playoffs Monday night, 56-52.
California Pacific Conference have released their Women's Basketball All Conference Awards. Westcliff grabbed a lot of these awards for their historic 1st season in the conference. Trinity Vasquez has been selected as the Cal Pac Player of the Year, Newcomer of the Year along with being 1st Team All Cal Pac Laura Tapia has been selected as the Cal Pac Defender of the Year, All Cal Pac Defensive Team and 1st Team All Cal Pac Bailey Hawkins has been selected on the 1st Team All Cal Pac. All three Vasquez, Tapia and Hawkins were selected unanimously by the conference coaches Coach Kyle Rouse was also selected as the Cal Pac Coach of the Year. Sara Weber has also earned the Cal Pac Champion of Character Award.
There's nothing quite like the college basketball postseason, and the Warriors are going dancing. The Westcliff women's basketball team has been at or near the top of the California Pacific Conference standings all season, and on Monday night, the Warriors (10-2) captured the final remaining automatic bid for the Cal Pac postseason by winning the Southern Division outright with a 78-43 drubbing of Saint Katherine.
What Happened? Westcliff Warriors faced off against Antelope Valley for the second time this season. The Previous encounter resulted in a Warrior come from behind victory in the final minute of the game. This game was nothing like the 1st a strong warrior defense helped create some turnovers and offensive plays to get up on the Pioneers headed into the halftime. The 2nd Period proved beneficial to the Warriors down the stretch as they outscore their opponent 24-5. The rest of the game the Pioneers had a hard time chipping away at the 20 point difference. The Final score Westcliff Warriors 64 Antelope Valley 42. Westcliff improves to 12-10 and 9-2 in the Cal Pac.
What Happened? Westcliff Warriors hosted the Simpson Redhawks at the Jordan Lawley Facility. This match up was exciting from start to finish. The Warriors started of slow with the Redhawks getting a 5-0 lead in the opening minute of play. The silence was then broken by a jump shot from Bailey Hawkins. Warriors after the 1st period led the game 19-11. However in the 2nd period the Redhawks flipped the score. Outscoring the Warriors in the 2nd period 21-12. Going into halftime with the score Westcliff 31 Simpson 32. The 3rd and 4th Period the Warriors went on a shooting spree. In the 3rd Period outshot the Redhawks 17-12. In the 4th period the Warriors defense proved fatal to the Redhawks limiting them to only 8 point in the entire period. Westcliff closed out the victory 68-52.
The Westcliff women’s basketball team found itself embroiled in an instant classic Thursday night at the Jordan Lawley Center, but came up just short to UC Merced in overtime, 70-68.
Trinity Vasquez has made a solid argument for herself as the California Pacific Conference's most prolific offensive performer this season. Sunday in the desert, Vasquez added an exclamation point to that claim with a brilliant 28-point effort that featured a perfect 14-of-14 showing at the charity stripe in leading Westcliff to its eighth Cal Pac win in nine tries, 52-49, at Embry-Riddle.
Coming off an electric Saturday night at Jordan Lawley Center where the Westcliff women’s basketball team erased a 17-point second-half deficit to beat Antelope Valley, there was very little gas left in the tank Sunday. The Warriors legs just didn’t have the lift and a lot of routine shots didn’t fall in a 63-54 loss to a well-coached and disciplined UC Santa Cruz crew.

The Westcliff women’s basketball team faced long odds Thursday night at Jordan Lawley Center, where the Warriors found themselves suiting up for their first ever Cal Pac Conference contest with just six players. COVID has not been kind to Westcliff as of late, sending a handful of Warriors into the protocol and out of action, including starting small forward Remy Hare. Fortunately for the Warriors, Trinity Vasquez, Bailey Hawkins and Laura Tapia did lace up Thursday and decided to put on a show in an improbable 61-59 victory over La Sierra.
There was a reason why Westcliff women’s basketball played through a gauntlet first-half of the season. The Warriors placed improving over collecting breezy preseason wins. But now that Santa has come and gone, and we’ve welcomed in a new year – that bill is coming due for Warrior opponents. Westcliff dominated Bethesda Tuesday night at Golden West College, 84-33, a 50-piece win in which every single player on the roster scored.
The Westcliff women’s basketball team wrapped up its pre-Christmas schedule Saturday afternoon at the Jordan Lawley Center, where Dordt University (Iowa) used its size advantage to hand the Warriors a 72-59 loss.
The Westcliff women’s basketball team faced another top-notch opponent in Bellevue University (Nebraska) Thursday at the Jordan Lawley Center, and after fighting back from a double-digit deficit to take a second-half lead, it looked like the Warriors would pull off the upset. The Bruins hit some big shots down the stretch and couple of buckets didn’t fall for the Warriors, and that was all she wrote in a 59-49 loss.
UC Santa Barbara, UC Irvine, College of Idaho, The Master’s and now, No. 17 Northwestern. The Westcliff women’s basketball team takes on all comers, and Saturday at the Jordan Lawley Center, they could have pulled off the upset over the Red Raiders before falling, 79-67. The game was a two-bucket contest with a minute to play and had a couple of controversial calls gone the other way, the outcome could have been very different.
