Practice Made Perfect: Rouse Presents at WBCA

The Women's Basketball Coaches Association held its annual national convention last weekend in Minneapolis, Minn., and Westcliff women's basketball head coach Kyle Rouse was asked to present a panel on creating effective and engaging practices. Coming off a season in which Westcliff qualified for the NAIA national tournament in its first year of eligibility and claimed its first ever All NAIA national recognition for a player (Trinity Vasquez), it was the proverbial cherry-on-top when Rouse was asked to present.

Women's Basketball Set a High Bar for Westcliff Athletics

Westcliff's Women's Basketball team fell short in the NAIA Women's Basketball Opening Round to the defending National Champions and the #2 ranked team in the nation Westmont College. Throughout the game our Warriors team did what they have done all year which was fight for 40 minutes.  The game started off intense with Westmont gaining the lead but the Warriors soon found their rhythm. The 1st period ended with a score Westmont 13 Westcliff 11. However, those 11 points are a little deceiving. Freshman Guard Neyha Lali who all season has facilitated key shots for other Warriors. In this game against Westmont it was Lali that found open looks with a hot streak. Neyha in the 1st period shot all 11 points for the Warriors keeping them in the game.  2nd Period saw the Warriors both Westmont and Westcliff fight for every possession. The Warriors went into the half down up 2 with a last second layup from Laura Tapia. More impressive from the guard Neyha Lali at the half was shooting 100% from the field for 16 points 3-3 from beyond the arc. Entering into the 3rd period Westmont started separating themselves from the Warriors. Westcliff kept the game within reach from some key offensive plays from Bailey Hawkins and Trinity Vasquez. The 4th period Westcliff fought down up 10. Westcliff never gave up against the #1 seed in the bracket. Westmont ultimately came up with the win 62-47. The Women's Basketball team set a new bar here at Westcliff University. Even though they were seeded as #16 against the #1 seeded Westmont who are also the defending NAIA National Champions. Westcliff earned respect from the Westmont team and administration for not giving them an easy win in the opening round. Westcliff Women's Basketball earned the ticket to the National Championship in their 1st year of eligibility some teams wait decades.  No one can take away from this team what they accomplished. No other team can be the 1st team to make it to the NAIA National Championship. This belongs to the Women's Basketball team of 2021-2022.

Warriors Fall in Final, but Season Marches On

Moral victories are for the birds. No one wants to talk about how great the season was immediately after it comes to a screeching halt. But some seasons are that good, and luckily for the Westcliff women's basketball team, after falling in the California Pacific Conference championship game in their first year of Cal Pac competition, 64-46, to UC Merced, the season is not over.

Riddle Solved: Vasquez Drops 28 on Eagles

Trinity Vasquez has made a solid argument for herself as the California Pacific Conference's most prolific offensive performer this season. Sunday in the desert, Vasquez added an exclamation point to that claim with a brilliant 28-point effort that featured a perfect 14-of-14 showing at the charity stripe in leading Westcliff to its eighth Cal Pac win in nine tries, 52-49, at Embry-Riddle.

Winded Warriors Drop One to Slugs

Coming off an electric Saturday night at Jordan Lawley Center where the Westcliff women’s basketball team erased a 17-point second-half deficit to beat Antelope Valley, there was very little gas left in the tank Sunday. The Warriors legs just didn’t have the lift and a lot of routine shots didn’t fall in a 63-54 loss to a well-coached and disciplined UC Santa Cruz crew.

Odds Defied: Warriors Win with Just Six Players

The Westcliff women’s basketball team faced long odds Thursday night at Jordan Lawley Center, where the Warriors found themselves suiting up for their first ever Cal Pac Conference contest with just six players. COVID has not been kind to Westcliff as of late, sending a handful of Warriors into the protocol and out of action, including starting small forward Remy Hare. Fortunately for the Warriors, Trinity Vasquez, Bailey Hawkins and Laura Tapia did lace up Thursday and decided to put on a show in an improbable 61-59 victory over La Sierra.

Every Warrior Scores in Rout of Bethesda

There was a reason why Westcliff women’s basketball played through a gauntlet first-half of the season. The Warriors placed improving over collecting breezy preseason wins. But now that Santa has come and gone, and we’ve welcomed in a new year – that bill is coming due for Warrior opponents. Westcliff dominated Bethesda Tuesday night at Golden West College, 84-33, a 50-piece win in which every single player on the roster scored.

Trinity Vasquez led the way again, scoring a game-high 21 points.

Warriors Battle Back, Can’t Hang On

The Westcliff women’s basketball team faced another top-notch opponent in Bellevue University (Nebraska) Thursday at the Jordan Lawley Center, and after fighting back from a double-digit deficit to take a second-half lead, it looked like the Warriors would pull off the upset. The Bruins hit some big shots down the stretch and couple of buckets didn’t fall for the Warriors, and that was all she wrote in a 59-49 loss.

Warriors Hang Tough with No. 17 Northwestern

UC Santa Barbara, UC Irvine, College of Idaho, The Master’s and now, No. 17 Northwestern. The Westcliff women’s basketball team takes on all comers, and Saturday at the Jordan Lawley Center, they could have pulled off the upset over the Red Raiders before falling, 79-67. The game was a two-bucket contest with a minute to play and had a couple of controversial calls gone the other way, the outcome could have been very different.
